Lifestyle Habits for Healthy Feet

Why don’t we look after our feet?

We are busy. We make sure that our face and hair are presentable.  We book our car in for a service. We develop our studies or careers. We spend hours planning our next holiday or choosing which movie to watch. But what about our feet? The international trend is to ignore our feet until something goes wrong. A bit of a wash, quick dry, into the socks – white, black or not at all, add shoes and you are ready to go. Your feet can now be forgotten until you get to the end of your day. Time to kick off your shoes, jump into bed and dream of our unfolding happy lifestyle.

At some point a shocking thing happens. A sore toe, an itch or even blood. Suddenly our feet come into focus. We are stunned. A familiar pattern starts. First step – ignore the issue. Problem persists. Next step – old tube of a gunk from the bathroom cabinet. No success. Desperate step – we ask our friends or family, by which time our tortured feet are wishing they were attached to someone other than YOU. In fact you are wishing that your feet were attached to someone else too!

Finally the problem resolves, one way or the other. Are you going back to your old habits or are you going to make some changes? Here are some key areas for you to integrate into your busy lifestyle.

When you decide to actively include your feet in your life you might need to change quite a lot of habits. Overwhelmed? Don’t be. Just add one thing at a time. For example:

  • Read up on stop smoking strategies
  • Put the television remote control away from your armchair
  • Buy a piece of fruit
  • Have one less can of sugary soft drink per day
  • Make an appointment with a Podiatrist for a foot check
  • Look at your feet daily
  • Give your pointy toed, high heeled shoes a day off
  • Put your feet up for 15 minutes

Once you’ve nailed one new habit, add another. Amaze yourself and your feet
