Cosmetic Toe Nail Restoration

If you are not happy about how your toenails look, you may want to consider cosmetic toenail restoration. If you have nail damage or toenail fungus, you might feel you have to hide your nails away from prying eyes. It’s not pleasant for anyone, but if you are a woman who likes to show off her nails, it can be a complete and utter disaster.

The answer is to undergo cosmetic toenail reconstruction. It’s quick, easy, and painless, and at the end of the treatment, which takes only a short while, you will have a full set of beautiful-looking toenails. Even the giant from the American folklore story of “the hairy toe” might be appeased.

Toenail Injury

Dropping a heavy object on your toes can be more than just painful. If the impact is heavy enough to cause what is known as a  subungual hematoma, blood will pool under the injured toenail. The result will be a rather nasty-looking dark purple or black patch beneath the nail. Eventually, it will probably fall off, leaving you with a bare nail bed.

What to do Immediately after your Toenail Drops OffDamaged toe nail before cosmetic toenail restoration

As soon as you suffer an injury to your toenail, you should take immediate action. Do this to limit the damage and protect the injured area from further trauma. Here are a few tips to help.

  • If it is only a portion of the nail that has come away or been damaged, whatever you do, do not attempt to remove what’s left. We’ve all seen those nightmare horror movies where victims’ nails are forcibly pulled out with pair of pliers. Self-torture is not to be recommended.
  • If part of the toenail remains, take a pair of nail clippers, and as carefully as you can, gently trim the remnant back to stop it catching to your socks or other items of clothing. If you don’t fancy trying to do this yourself, go and see your family doctor or a professional podiatrist.
  • Having trimmed the remaining nails as well as you can, take a small nail file and smooth off any jagged edges.
  • Next, bathe the area gently, then carefully dry.
  • Cover the wounded toe with a soft bandage.

If the wounded area doesn’t stop bleeding, you should seek immediate medical help.

If the nail bed has not been irreparably damaged, the nail should eventually grow back. But in the meantime, you may wish to disguise the damage by undergoing toenail restoration.

Toenail  Fungal Treatment

Toenail fungus is a common problem, particularly with people as they grow older.  Onychomycosis, as it is officially called, affects up to one in every ten people, according to medical experts. In the elderly (those above 70), the ratio changes to one in every two people.

While it isn’t a serious medical problem that will adversely affect your health, it looks quite gross. It can even affect your self-confidence, forcing you to hide what you may think of as a hideous deformity from the world. I jest, of course, although many women would agree with that sentiment.

Toenail fungus can be difficult to treat. In some instances, it will never go away entirely, and even when it does, it can take weeks and months to disappear altogether. The answer is cosmetic nail restoration.

What is Cosmetic Toenail Restoration?

Nail restoration can be described as either a cosmetic or a medical procedure. Depending on the country, the gel that is used has a different name. In Australia, podiatrists often use Keryflex. In the UK, they use Wilde-Pedique Plus, and in the USA, they use LCN Barefoot – known as Pedique outside the USA.

The process is essentially the same, regardless of the country. First, the nail will be trimmed to get rid of any disease or damage. It will then be cleaned and any oils removed.

Layers of gel are then applied and moulded onto the nail or nail bed. Each layer is cured with UV light. The process continues until the right depth and shape are achieved.

The gel that is used has anti-fungal properties. It will not damage the underlying nail in any way or restrict its growth.

Who Can Have Cosmetic Toenail Restoration?

Cosmetic nail restoration is suitable for anyone – even big hairy giants. The people who can benefit from this treatment include:

  • Men and women
  • People with Diabetes
  • People with fungal, psoriatic, or thick toenails
  • Anyone who has discoloured toenails
  • Those with damaged toenails

It is even suitable for people who have lost their toenails completely. However, where there is zero nail or nail bed to adhere to, these cosmetic nails may only stay on for 24 hours. It’s only worth going down this avenue if you are attending a special function and want to show your feet and toenails off to best advantage.

The time for which toenail restoration lasts varies from person to person. The average expectancy is between six and eight weeks. It is not recommended to keep a prosthetic nail beyond eight weeks. The process can however be repeated. And yes – these nails can be painted!
